Nothing excuses replacing whole conversations with "." "." "." "." or "waggity waggity (that's dragon for fuck you for buying this localization)". And it might be in part due to many sharing the opinion that videogames physically harm people and turn them to murderers/rapists/pedophiles who rub the faces of everyone in sight, or that butchering the game is a requirement for a "not dry" "acceptable localization". That aside I can't help but dismissing the whole Fire Emblem Fates localization disaster just to "stick it to Gamergate" is just as sickening. I knew this topic would become about Gamergate/similar right-wing groups and their blacklisted people they want fired for having "wrong opinions" (sic). While grown adults complaining on hacking forums may not appreciate the localization changes made (which may have been made by an editor without even consulting the original Japanese text), there are probably MANY MORE people who do. Nintendo is updating and revising the series for a western audience of children. So while people like to get up on their high horse and talk about "pure" translations and losing the "real" meaning when something comes across the ocean, it's worth thinking about the fact that maybe the game isn't for you. I've translated several manga and once my text translation went off to the editors, I actually never saw it again. If you're lucky, it then goes back to the translator to confirm the meaning. The editor/proofreader may not even know Japanese (or whatever the source language is) and simply rewrites the text to give it the proper "voice" that they think fits the story. Another interesting thing that a lot of people don't know (or don't think about) is that unlike in literature translation, manga and video game translation typically goes through an editing and proofreading phase.
